During our honeymoon in 2003, there were only a handful of resorts to choose from in the Maldives. Fast forward 20 years. In 2023, when we enjoyed a Maldives family vacation (JOALI BEING) with our youngest daughter of then 16, the choices were endless.
Whether you are looking for a family-friendly resort or a leave-your-kids-at-home one, there is a resort for everyone in the Maldives.
As a proud member of 360 Private Travel, an esteemed luxury travel agency endorsed by Forbes Travel Guide, and a Virtuoso member, we frequently conduct inspections at various resorts in the Maldives to gain valuable knowledge.
You can trust us to recommend the perfect resort for you and your family after a discovery call to understand your preferences.
1. Seaplanes vs. Speedboats or Yachts
Upon arrival at Malé International Airport, you will need to travel to your resort either by seaplane or boat, depending on its location. Seaplanes are commonly used for resorts that are further away, while boats are used for resorts closer to Malé.
Seaplanes operate only during daylight hours, so it is advisable to arrive at Malé airport no later than 2:30 pm, preferably earlier, to ensure that you can catch your seaplane flight. The seaplane check-in closes at 3:30 pm.
Speedboats and yachts offer more flexibility for those staying closer to Malé and arriving before sunrise or after sunset, as they operate throughout the day and night. However, if you choose this option, you will miss out on the breathtaking aerial views of the atolls.
- Both JOALI resorts are only a scenic 40-minute seaplane ride away
- The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort is a scenic 45-minute seaplane ride away
- The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands is a 10 minute seaplane ride away or a 50-minute speedboat ride away
- COMO Maalifushi is a bit further away, requiring a scenic 60-minute seaplane ride
2. Resorts close to Malé vs. Remote Resorts
It can be convenient to stay at a resort that is close to the Malé airport and accessible by boat. However, if you prefer a more secluded, castaway feel, it’s best to choose a resort that is further away.
Keep in mind that staying close to the airport means you may experience constant boat traffic and see the lights of nearby islands at night, which can serve as a reminder that you’re just minutes away from a major city.
3. Man-Made Islands vs. Natural Islands
During our stay at JOALI BEING, we were mesmerized by the lush greenery surrounding us. We relished our bicycle rides while being surrounded by jungle-like trees, which made us feel one with nature.
Later, I learned that not all islands in the Maldives are natural. Some of the latest resorts, which are often situated closer to Malé, are built on man-made islands.
However, natural islands offer better sand quality, more shade from the sun, and are home to more wildlife than the man-made ones.
It’s interesting to note that JOALI BEING, JOALI Maldives, COMO Maalifushi, and The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort are all situated on natural islands.
4. Weather
The weather can be unpredictable during the monsoon change, which happens twice a year – from the end of May to the beginning of June, and from the end of October to the beginning of November.
Generally, the period from May to October is considered to be the rainy season. However, during my stay in August, the weather was fantastic, and we hardly experienced any rain.
